The VM40 gasmask was the primary civilian gasmask utilized through-out the war and used by the Luftschutz.(The Air Protection League) Molded green rubber construction gasmask with sheet metal and alloy fittings and tinted celluloid eye socket lenses. The mask has head strap with metal alloy fit adjustment buckles. The green filter securing ring is marked with embossed ''F" .The rubber mask interior is stamped RL1-38/4 Vertrieb gemäß § 8 Luftschutzgesetz genehmigt", (National Air Raid Protection Laws}" The clear celluloid eye lenses are secured by natural metal alloy rings. The exterior of the mask is marked with an orange ink stamped waffen-amt. The mask is in overall very good condition with all the components intact and the rubber is in excellent condition. Alloy construction breathing filter is well marked with embossed numeral, "5 125", and additional black ink stamped numerals, "038", and "615", and a black waffen-amt inkstamp. The mask and filter come housed in their original sheet metal carrying canister. These were usually privately purchased.Blue carrying strap attached and in good condition.The surface of the lid is embossed with a stag and beneath the letters DRGM for 'Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster'(Registration For Copyright Protection) and maker stamp 'Scheithauer'. This was the company of E. Martin Scheithauer KG based in Zwonitz Sachsen .Also embossed beneath maker is RL1-40/11 Vertrieb gemäß § 8 Luftschutzgesetz genehmigt", (National Air Raid Protection Laws)
