(Code: 2829) | | Very scarce Kriegsmarine Merchant ship flag with Iron Cross (Handelsflagge mit dem EisernenKreuz) the Iron Cross denotes the ship was piloted by retired officer. Veteran bring back: The owner stated "The flag was given to my father in law by Jack McDonald, the port diver and my fathers in law's brother in law on his return from the war. He was working at a German port at the end of the war where he acquired the flag. It was stored by him ever since the war and came to me, upon my father in law's death in 1990 it has been stored in our loft ever since." Extremely large flag being over six foot tall by over ten foot long. Typical German made material as found on battle flags complete with two reinforcing panels on the hoist end and corner stitching on the other sides. Unfortunately the halyard band is not present, it appears the flag has been torn from the large ship where it was flown, this end of the flag is therefore frayed. An impressive display piece with the huge Iron Cross being over 40cm high and arms of the swastika being about 18cm wide. The flag has numerous holes however these flags rarely come on the market. |
